Replikas are copies of Lyoko that were created by X.A.N.A. after it left the factory's supercomputer and escaped out onto the internet.
After obtaining the keys from Aelita's virtual memory, XANA succeeded in breaking its tether to the Heart of Lyoko so the Lyoko Warriors could no longer pull the plug on it. With his new power, XANA began to infect supercomputers around the world using his multi-agent system, due to it still requiring a computer to house its core programming.
In order to exist inside of these computers, XANA needed a new virtual world to serve as its anchor to them, thus using Lyoko as a template to quickly create hundreds of new digital worlds in order to maximize its safety, as well as further increase its power.
Unlike the real Lyoko, each of these Replikas were hosted on less powerful supercomputers and thus were only capable of having one sector.
Description[]
In order for digital entities as sophisticated as Lyoko or X.A.N.A. to exist, they require a machine that has enough processing power to contain all of their data. Normal computers are far too weak to be capable of containing so much data or resources, therefore only a supercomputer is powerful enough to withstand so much digital information.
After obtaining the Keys to Lyoko, XANA was able to detach itself from Lyoko but still required a digital world to anchor itself to in order to survive. Thus, he realized that he needed to enter other supercomputers around the world and use their processing power to create new digital worlds inside of them to contain its own core programming. In doing so, it not only granted XANA control over the supercomputers, but also all machines in their surrounding area, due to these computers usually being placed inside of abandoned structures that controlled other devices inside.
Despite each of these machines being less powerful than the supercomputer than Franz Hopper built, the combined power of all of them more than made up for that, granting XANA a far greater amount of machine resources to grant him new powers, such as using their combined energies to create ultra-powerful monsters inside of the Replikas, creating new monsters capable of surviving inside the Digital Sea, or possessing people without needing to activate a Tower, feats there were impossible for it to accomplish when it was still bound to Lyoko.
The exact number of Replikas was unknown, with Jeremie only claiming there to be hundreds, after learning of this in Cold Sweat, thus causing him to abandon their plan of destroying Replikas systematically in favor of a creating his own multi-agent system that could destroy Replikas more quickly and effectively. Due to being copies of Lyoko, the Replikas are compatible with most of the software built for the Supercomputer. This includes the devirtualization and materialization programs, vehicles, and programs related to towers. However, any program that requires interfacing with the Factory's Supercomputer requires a link of some form, usually the Skid.
Replikas have floodgates and gravitational pulls surrounding their Virtual World Shells on par with Lyoko. These gates are locked and can only be opened by Jeremie and Aelita.
History[]
It is unknown when the first of any of the Replikas were created by X.A.N.A. since their existence was never known until the maiden voyage of the Skidbladnir, but it is quite possible that they have been around since some time between The Key and Straight to Heart after X.A.N.A. stole Aelita's memory and the Keys of Lyoko and escaped the supercomputer, as the very first one was located by the Superscan in Straight to Heart, but it was not discovered until A Lack of Goodwill.
The first Replika was spotted in Maiden Voyage. It was a Forest Replika, which was confirmed in the episode Replika when it was explored as well.
With the exception of the Cortex, all of the remaining Replikas were destroyed in Fight to the Finish, by the Anti-X.A.N.A. Program.

Trivia[]
- Along with the cut Mountain Replika, more Replikas were planned to be in the show as well. Exactly how many is unclear, as director Jérôme Mouscadet simply said "a lot more".[1] Sophie Decroisette confirmed at least one more was cut.[2] She also clarified that it wasn't the Volcano Replika, revealing it was never planned for the show and only created for Quest for Infinity.
