–Jeremie to the Lyoko Warriors in The Key |
Jeremie Belpois (also spelled Jeremy Belpois or with an accented spelling Jérémie Belpois) is the main protagonist of Code Lyoko, a student at Kadic Academy, and the founder and unofficial leader of the Lyoko Warriors. He is Aelita's love interest.
Despite his young age, Jeremie is a scientific genius, possessing a gifted and talented mind far beyond his years. He is the archetypal Mission Coordinator of the Lyoko Warriors, meaning that instead of going to Lyoko with the rest of the gang to fight monsters and go on adventures, he monitors their adventures from the computer in the physical world, operating the supercomputer and providing tactical support. Specifically, he acts as the group's guide on missions and the programmer for Lyoko, since he is the only one that is capable of operating (or even understanding) the complex nature of the Supercomputer (other than Aelita, who starts to share his role in later seasons). This arguably makes him the most important member of the team.
It was Jeremie's discovery of the Supercomputer that commenced the group's adventures into the world of Lyoko, and their war against the power of X.A.N.A.
Description
Jeremie is first introduced as part of Odd and Ulrich's class. He's the youngest of the group, having skipped a grade at one point.[1] He succeeds in every class, except Gym (as shown throughout the series, most notably in Maiden Voyage) and Italian (as mentioned in Attack of the Zombies), and is considered a gifted student by a lot of teachers and the school psychologist, who decides that he needs to go to a special school for gifted children (as seen in Plagued). He is often considered the teachers’ pet, and therefore he had no friends before befriending the Lyoko Warriors. Jealously looked upon by Herb, one of Sissi's group members, Jeremie is perceived as a boring and inaccessible intellectual by the other school kids, except his group of friends. Despite this, however, Jeremie's character is portrayed as a kind and compassionate, somewhat naïve individual, and his friends look up to his brains. Aspects of Jeremie's personality was said to be inspired by Sophie Decroisette's father, a physicist, and her husband, who's a scientist, specifically the latter's "mathematical obsessions".[2][3]
Wearing simple clothes and big glasses, his clothes reflect his modest and discreet character. Nevertheless, Jeremie is nothing of a stereotype because, other than his academic performance, he has a really well-asserted personality. His character can be compared to Yumi's, due to their stubbornness and devotion to studies.
An introvert, Jeremie spends most of his time in front of his computer screen, under the friendly glance of Einstein, the portrait of whom hangs over his bed. He spends most of the series programming, and he often goes without sleep at night, all to achieve the goal of freeing Aelita and destroying X.A.N.A. once and for all. If not working, he is often conversing with Aelita, for whom he develops particular feelings as they spend hours talking, with Jeremie enlightening her about the "real world" to prepare her for her future life on Earth.
Personality
Jeremie is responsible, resourceful, and endlessly motivated. His dedication to his work is driven by his devotion to his friends and to protecting the world from X.A.N.A.'s threats, and he is willing to take great risks in order to further his goals. Jeremie's confidence is a key part of the team's framework, and his ability to reassure his friends has gotten them through some of their darkest hours.
However, being the stereotypical nerd, there are times where Jeremie's personality can create friction or alienation between his friends. His intelligence can cause him to be clueless to other people's viewpoints, and his ability to read emotions is lacking to say the least. He can be stubborn to no end, and this can cause him to snap at his friends or even neglect them completely. Jeremie is also dismissive of many of his friends' passions and hobbies, rarely bothering to get involved in their personal lives if it in any way gets in the way of his work on Lyoko or school.
Despite all this, Jeremie is still able to commit to having fun if the situation allows. He can trade jokes with the rest of the group easily, and in A Lack of Goodwill, he displays a surprisingly smuggish side as he goes to great lengths to answer all of Milly and Tamiya's questions about the supercomputer, knowing he would wipe their memories of the event moments later with a Return to the Past.
In Echoes, Jeremie confirms that he treasures his friendship with Odd, Ulrich, Yumi, and Aelita more than anything. He has always feared that their friendship would dissolve if their adventures were to ever come to an end; something Yumi assures him would never happen in real life.
Appearance
Jeremie is a blond-haired bespectacled boy with a fair complexion. He usually wears black framed glasses.
For the first three seasons, Jeremie wears a blue long-sleeved turtleneck top and similar-coloured shoes, brown cropped trousers and no socks. In Season 4, he wears a similar turtleneck in maroon red, his longer (though still not full-length) trousers are moss green with blue stripes on the outer seams, and his shoes became navy blue with gray soles. In Evolution, he favours checked button-up shirts with the sleeves either short or rolled up to his forearm, with grey jeans and tan shoes.
Abilities and Equipment
Jeremie has various tools that aid him in his differing exploits, the most notable of which is his laptop, which he carries with him all the time in case his Superscan program detects a X.A.N.A. attack. It is one of his primary technological ports, the other two being the computer in his dorm and the interface at the lab.
Jeremie's incredible intellect lends itself to his astonishing computing skills, which include developing codes and programs that have both helped and hindered the success of the Lyoko Warriors. His hacking skills are also stellar, as he is able to keep up with X.A.N.A. itself in terms of both stalling and defense. He is also able to take advantage of the supercomputer's hidden abilities, activating towers and launching programs to give himself and the team the winning edge (although it should be noted that every tower he has ever activated has been hacked by X.A.N.A. at one point or another).
In Season 4, Jeremie knows how to fully protect his towers from X.A.N.A.'s influence, since he has full knowledge of Lyoko thanks to the data sent by Franz Hopper used to recreate the virtual world. In Double Take, Jeremie activated a tower to create a clone of himself. Since X.A.N.A. couldn't influence the Tower directly, X.A.N.A. had to use William to attack and possess the Tower to control the clone, but the tower was deactivated by Aelita, and after a return to the past, Jeremie then had to reuse the tower to generate a clone of William to avoid suspicion about the real one's disappearance. In Wreck Room, X.A.N.A. took over the tower used to maintain the William clone, due to a bug which cropped up from one of his programs has messed up its security programs.
Jeremie is a skilled inventor. He is known for making good use of the tools around his present location, such as in Plagued, where he discovered the X.A.N.A.-possessed rats' weakness: light; by using a common flashlight. He is also known to have an interest in building robots, as seen in Swarming Attack, Killer Music, and The Robots. Most of them are composed of various high-tech devices. However, since most of the things Jeremie uses are immediately used and not tested, some of them inevitably fail.
(For example, his bee-distracting robot in Swarming Attack ran out of batteries, resulting in the near-death of Ulrich (who was saved by Yumi). His attempt to create a monster to keep X.A.N.A.'s monsters at bay, while Aelita deactivated towers in Marabounta, also had disastrous results: almost killing Aelita on Lyoko. Also, in Nobody in Particular, his program to virtualize people directly into Sector Five is used on Ulrich, separating his body and mind, allowing X.A.N.A. to take control of his body and use it to attack the Core of Lyoko. His materialization program for Aelita also had various attempts, most of which had failed, until Code: Earth.
Some of Jeremie's talents are, to say the least, not exactly legal to perform. He is skilled at faking phone calls with his voice synthesizer, which enabled him to keep both the school and William's parents from discovering William's absence for months. It is also confirmed in Cousins Once Removed that Jeremie has forged all of Aelita's health and ID documents to keep her existence off of any suspicious radars.
Jeremie uses a scooter to get to and from the Factory like Aelita, but is afraid of jumping over the obstacles because he is not as daring as his friends.
Relationships
Aelita Schaeffer
Jeremie was the first person to meet Aelita when he turned the supercomputer back on in X.A.N.A. Awakens. From that point on, Jeremie spent the majority of his time trying to materialize her into the real world, which led to him developing romantic feelings for Aelita. Despite his feelings for her, he can occasionally puts working on the supercomputer and finding ways to beat X.A.N.A. before Aelita, most notably in Music to Soothe the Savage Beast, where he was more interested in working on a new program that can locate more Replikas than seeing Aelita's opening act at the Subdigitals concert. At the end of the same episode, he apologizes for missing the concert the first time and tells her that he couldn't miss it twice after the return in time was launched.
In False Pretenses, it is revealed that Aelita calls him "proxy pie" when they are alone together.

Etymology
Jeremie, Jeremy, and Jérémie are all French or English variants of the Hebrew name Jeremiah (ירמיהו), which roughly means God exalts me. Jeremiah is also a major prophet in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity who is associated with the phrase "Attack you they will, overcome you they cannot," a reference to Jeremie's ability to continually keep X.A.N.A. at bay throughout the series. The surname Belpois is a French surname of unknown origin and etymology, although it is relatively common in northeastern France.
Trivia
- Jeremie was named after Jérémie Périn, one of Thomas Romain and Tania Palumbo's old classmates at the Parisian visual arts school Gobelins School of the Image.[4]
- After Code Lyoko became popular internationally, the production team decided to change the spelling of his name to Jérémy (Anglicised as Jeremy). As such, most official post-Season 1 media refers to him as Jérémy or Jeremy for this reason.
- He shares the same voice actress with Aelita in the English dub.
- Jeremie's notable for having two distinct voices throughout the series despite having the same voice actor. In Teddygozilla and Log Book and season 3-4, his voice is more high pitched. For the rest of season 1 and 2, he has a much more nasally and lower pitched voice. Sharon Mann explained that originally the studio wanted the actors to mimic the French voices when they recorded Teddygozilla and Log Book.[5] Once the series was officially picked up several months later, Mann could not remember the voice she used for Jeremie, and the studio didn't have any recordings for reference available so she "had to wing it". However, Moonscoop (specifically show director Jérôme Mouscadet) disliked this voice and asked Mann to change it by season 3.[6][7]
- He is the only Lyoko Warrior in Evolution to have an episode named after him (Jeremy's Blues).
- Jeremie has earned the nickname "Einstein", due to his impressive intellect. In the second season, Sissi starts calling Aelita "Mrs. Einstein", a hint towards their romantic relationship. Jeremie also has a poster of Albert Einstein on the wall in his room.
- Jeremie's father, Michael, has only made two appearances in the series; the first one being at the near-end of the episode Franz Hopper and was also seen in Distant Memory. Also, Jeremie's cousin, Patrick, has made his first and only appearance in the episode Cousins Once Removed. Jeremie's mother, however, has never been shown, but she is confirmed to be alive.
- Jeremie often gets self-absorbed and orders around the other members of the group around, such as in Image Problem, often giving orders as if the group was a military organization.
- The line about Jeremie wearing "underwear with kangaroos printed on them" is a mistranslation. It originally meant "kangaroo" style, or "brief" underwear, sometimes derisively known as "tighty-whiteys".
- When Ulrich said he would tell Jeremie to switch to boxers in Temptation, it looks like he did, as seen in Tip-Top Shape, when Jeremie is shown wearing red boxers.
- He has been virtualized three times (Frontier, Ghost Channel, and Mister Pück), and only two of the three times he was able to get to Lyoko without any problems.
- Jeremie's Lyoko form has yet to be shown and will likely never be shown. As he stated in Mister Pück, he would never go to Lyoko again and prefers his job of manning the computer console. The only information about Jeremie's Lyoko form is Odd's statement that it looks ridiculous.
- In the novels, Jeremie's Lyoko form is identical to the Disney incarnation of Peter Pan.
- Jeremie's Lyoko form has yet to be shown and will likely never be shown. As he stated in Mister Pück, he would never go to Lyoko again and prefers his job of manning the computer console. The only information about Jeremie's Lyoko form is Odd's statement that it looks ridiculous.
- Despite his apparent athletic incompetence, Jeremie appears to be a talented swimmer, as shown in Laughing Fit and Déjà Vu.
- Jeremie is the only one of the team's boys who is successful at a scientific school subject and is the only one of boys who's not good at gym.
- In Cold War, Jeremie stated that his grade point average is 99.87 out of 100.
- In Final Round, it is revealed that Jeremie likes to have hot chocolate, cereal, and maple syrup for breakfast.
- Jeremie may have had a crush on or a small attraction to Yumi as his clone was flirting with her in Double Take. This could also be a subtle callback to the episode Image Problem, where a Clone of Yumi flirts with Jeremie.
- It is revealed in the Evolution episode False Pretenses that Aelita calls him "Proxy-Pie" when they are alone.
- Jeremie was a main character in the game Quest for Infinity, but he was not playable.
- Jeremie's first production appearance was in Les enfants, the prototype to Garage Kids. He was the character who loaded the film reel. This is noteworthy because even in early character incarnations, he was always the technically capable one.

- ↑ Reply from TB3: "Jeremie's voice has been contentious for a number of years - neither Sharon, nor Jerome have been happy with it, and the new one is one that all parties are happy with... It started with Sharon trying to replicate the French voice in English - which was high and girly as seen in the first eps... Sharon then went another way and tried that nasally voice, which Jerome wasn't happy with and neither was she - so for Season Three she struck a mid-point between the two..." Lyoko Freak.
