Image Problem (original title "Problème d'image"") is the seventh episode of Season 1 of Code Lyoko.

Plot[]

The episode starts with Yumi and Aelita running to a tower in the Ice Sector after Jeremie senses something wrong with it. Aelita checks it out and says that this tower is inactive. Yumi waits outside the tower and hears a strange noise. Suddenly, Aelita and Jeremie hear her scream. Jeremie, seeing that Yumi is not on-screen at the Factory Interface, promptly tells Aelita to stay in the tower so he can scan for things. Just when Jeremie is about to do so, Yumi emerges from one of the scanners and faints. At school, Jeremie, Odd, and Ulrich take her to the infirmary.

When Yumi awakens and Yolanda tells her to lay down and get some rest, she throws the helpless nurse out of the way. In an unusually bad mood, Yumi converses with her friends and even suggests that Ulrich should go out with Sissi, much to everyone's shock. She is then beckoned by Mr. Delmas, who wants to know why she has attacked Yolanda. Concerned the principal asks her if she's having family problems but she doesn't respond. He threatens to call her parents but angered Yumi, showing the white glowing Eye of X.A.N.A. on her forehead, knocks the principal unconscious with the phone and goes to Jeremie's dorm to see if she can convince him to get her to the scanner room. Jim tries to act friendly with her by saying hi to her, but "Yumi" ignores him, much to his confusion.

Meanwhile, Aelita decides to do some searching outside and discovers a Guardian on top of the iceberg behind a tower. It is being guarded by Kankrelats and she is unable to see its contents. The Kankrelats shoot at Aelita. After running back to the tower quickly, she tells Jeremie about the situation.

Back at the school, after Jeremie stops talking to Aelita, "Yumi" decides she wants to go to the Scanner Room, so she tries to seduce Jeremie to convince him to arrange a mission, who is really confused and scared by her behavior. She fails, but Odd and Ulrich stumble upon the scene, and when Ulrich sees "Yumi" trying to kiss Jeremie, he is outraged and heartbroken and Jeremie tries to explain while Odd congratulates sarcastically on her behavior while she chuckles evilly to herself after everyone leaves. Jeremie apologizes for the incident, citing Yumi's strange behavior and he tells them they should go to the Factory to help Aelita.

Back at the Ice Sector, Aelita avoids the Kankrelats' attack as she slips through the gap of the iceberg. She then climbs up and quietly sneaks towards the Guardian. Once she approaches it, Aelita is shocked to see what, or rather, who is inside the Guardian before the Kankrelets attack her again.

When they head back to Jeremie's room, they find his computer destroyed. Jeremie begins to suspect "Yumi" may have done this, but Ulrich refuses to believe it, although Odd admits that "Yumi" has been acting weird lately. As Jeremie and Ulrich argue, "Yumi" suddenly shows up to meet them, still wanting to go to Lyoko. Having no choice, they go. At the Factory, Ulrich and Odd go to Lyoko, but "Yumi" forces the scanner door open and tries to disconnect the scanners from the Supercomputer by pulling their plugs. Jeremie notices and goes to the Scanner Room to see what the problem is.

When Ulrich and Odd are virtialized in the Ice Sector, they notice that "Yumi" wasn't with them. They see Aelita being chased by two Kankrelats and save her from them. Aelita tells Odd and Ulrich that they have to rescue Yumi, much to Ulrich's confusion. She reveals that the real Yumi is still in Lyoko, imprisoned by the Guardian, while the other "Yumi" is a clone created by X.A.N.A. Aelita tries to warn Jeremie, but he has already went down to the Scanner Room. In the scanner room, Jeremie sees X.A.N.A. Yumi pulling the plugs from the scanners and is shocked. She pretends to look like she's not feeling good and when Jeremie approaches her, she knocks him out and continues trying to disconnect the scanners.

After taking down the remaining Kankrelats, Ulrich tries to free Yumi with his katana, but the Guardian is unbreakable. Aelita figures out a way to free Yumi. She creates a clone of Yumi via her Creativity to make it believe it has the wrong prisoner. The Guardian gets confused and tries to absorb the clone Yumi too, but this is beyond its ability and it explodes in a brilliant flash, releasing Yumi.

Yumi wakes up to see Ulrich and asks what happened. He, Odd, and Aelita realize that Jeremie is all alone with the other "Yumi". Recovered, Yumi also realizes that one of them needs to go back to the Factory. Ulrich volunteers, but Yumi disagrees and suggests that she should return to the Factory instead as she doesn't have enough life points and wants to deal with the other "her". Ulrich agrees with Yumi but he points how to get herself devirtualized. She then suggests that Ulrich should devirtualize her since he is armed with his katana. Yumi emerges from the scanner, after she was devirtualized by Ulrich off-screen, and she confronts her impostor.

Jeremie wakes up, but the hatch leading to the Supercomputer Room was torn off by X.A.N.A. Yumi. Jeremie pushes X.A.N.A. Yumi into the hole. However, she grabs Jeremie and tries to throw him in. Aelita deactivates the tower and a return to the past envelops everything, saving Jeremie from certain death.

Back in the past, with Odd, Ulrich and Yumi present in Jeremie's room, Aelita points out that if X.A.N.A. was able to sent another Yumi to the real world, it proves that her materialization is possible. While the Lyoko Warriors are surprised that X.A.N.A. was "helping" them, they talk about how they were fooled by Yumi's clone. Jeremie claims that "Yumi" didn't fool him by noticing the difference when she flirts with him. Yumi pretends to seduce Jeremie again as a joke, but Ulrich gets annoyed and stops her. Yumi teases Ulrich, asking him if he is jealous, much to his surprise. After Odd comments that Ulrich may be jealous, everyone laughs, much to Ulrich's annoyance.

Trivia[]

  • The original French name for this episode is Problème d'image.
  • This episode introduces several "firsts" for the series:
    • Yumi's surname is mentioned for the first time.
    • X.A.N.A. uses the scanners to stop the Lyoko Warriors for the first time.
    • The first appearance of the Guardian.
    • This is the first time a member of the group devirtualizes another member.
    • The first time X.A.N.A. lures the Lyoko Warriors to Lyoko by activating a tower.
    • The first time a Polymorphic Clone is used.
    • In terms of production order, this was the first episode to feature Bruno Regeste as writer.
    • This was the first in a handful of episodes from Season 1 where a Return to the Past launched despite no one being at the keyboard to do it. This has to do with the lore being different in Season 1 than the rest of the series, as Aelita herself was originally the one who launched it automatically when she deactivated a tower according to the bible.[1]
  • Sophie Decroisette described this episode as "very difficult to write", as its original writer Ghislaine Pujol left the show after writing the synopsis; requiring Bruno Regeste to step in and expand it into a script.[2]
  • This episode was included in X.A.N.A. Possessed.

Errors[]

  • The French DVD release of this episode (which is what's used on the official YouTube channel) has noticeably duller colors for some reason. The English version is unaffected. It shares this distinction with Cruel Dilemma.
